Quotes That Chill You to the Bone

One of the things I love most in a game is dialogue, be it written or spoken.

You ever play a game, and one of the characters says something so creepy that it just makes your skin crawl? How about when just one line delivers the climax of the story so beautifully that you can never forget it? Oh! How about when the opening of the game, the very first line spoken, sets the mood of the game just perfectly?

Sometimes these quotes from video games are so compelling, that you will never forget them, the game, or the characters for a long time.

*Warning...Spoilers*

Top 5 Chilling Video Game Quotes

5. The cake is a lie.
Portal

Of course this would be on the list! Throughout the game, the evil computer GlaDOS repeatedly mentions that after you complete the experiment, you will receive some well deserved cake. Mmmmm...cake. You can't wait to sink your teeth into some moist chocolate icing. But what's this? You've stumbled upon a room with a message written by a past test subject! What does it say? "the cake is a lie. the cake is a lie. the cake is a lie. the cake is a lie." There never was any cake because GlaDOS has no intention in letting you survive the experiment. Of course you could've guess that already, but the delivery is appreciated.

4. Cut off their limbs.
Dead Space

This little message sprawled in blood is probably the best advice in the entire game. You soon learn that this really is the only way to quickly kill a necromorph, especially when there are about ten of them barreling towards you, ready to gauge out your innards and devour your head. It doesn't help when they move really fast, swinging their arms all over the place. It also doesn't help that whenever I see one of these things coming after me, I lose all my cool, scream my head off, and just pull the trigger, not really aiming for the limbs. Sadly, this often results in my death.

3. Rise and shine, Mr. Freeman.
Half-Life 2
Whoever watched the opening to Half-Life 2 and did not shudder at the G-Man's introductory speech has balls made of steel! Imagine waking up to this guy's voice, and the first thing you see are his eyes just staring at you. The G-Man is always there, always watching every move Gordon Freeman makes, even while he sleeps. The G-Man, who is pretty much the embodiment of mystery, opens the game in such a mysterious and chilling manner that it leaves the player looking forward to hours of gameplay. Oh, and instead of waking up to smell the coffee, poor Gordon has to "wake up...and smell the ashes."

2. War. War never changes.
Fallout

Hearing this phrase at the beginning of every Fallout game always makes goosebumps dance over my skin. Why? Because it's true! War has never changed, and it never will change. War has always consisted of weapons (from sticks and bones to tanks), fighters (from Mayan warriors to the U.S. Marine Corps.), destruction (from burning villages to bombing cities), and the slaughter of thousands of lives (from soldiers to civilians). Why would it be any different in the future? War never changes. (Unless you count Snake's monologue in the opening of Metal Gear Solid 4: "War. War has changed.)

1. Would you kindly?
Bioshock

When I saw these words, when I realized their meaning, my heart stopped. All this time...All this time you have been nothing more than an artificially created being, a puppet, that has been helping the enemy just because he said one simple phrase: Would you kindly? All this time you thought you were just innocently playing the game, following instructions and objectives, when really, every single thing you did was only because you had to, because you were told to, because you couldn't disobey. You had no choice; you were a slave. Players realize this as Andrew Ryan yells his final words as you viciously beat him to death "A man chooses; a slave obeys." All this time...you were a slave to just three, harmless, little words...Would you kindly?

No matter how many times we play the game...no matter how many times we hear an amazing quote, we will always experience that same chilling feeling as we did when we heard it for the first time.
With that being said...Would you kindly leave me some feedback on my blog?
